CRITIQUE from MRS LEI TAFT, “Sunrunner” Kennels, Hawaii – CGRC Judge for Saturday 16 July 2016

Please extend my sincere appreciation to your Club for its invitation to judge your specialty, and your warm hospitality.  The gifts were lovely and the card brought much laughter.  I would also like to extend a special thank you to Katy Austin who took such good care of me and went out of her way to share a little bit of NZ.

Your dogs were a delight to judge and not one displayed anything but typical Golden character.  Kudos to the breeders for a job well done.

Baby Puppy Dog

1.       Arctique Let the Thunda Roll – Liz Steed

Great promise, level moving, lovely head, good substance, balanced angles front and rear.

Puppy Dog

1.       Goldsmith Worth His Salt – Kirsten Price

Longer cast, level mover, pretty head; most ‘together’ on the day.

2.       Benlea Dakoda – Wendy Mackay

Much potential but needs to be trained; cobby outline, nice front, short loin.

3.       Mistymoor Maranello – Jan Cook

Another dog with promise; pleasing head and expression; immature in body depth and breadth.

Junior Dog

1.       Goldendream Back in Time  - Melanie Snowdon

Big boy with all the parts in the right place; held himself moving; nice transition of neck into well laid shoulder; much potential.

2.       Speyside Fun in the Sun – Ruth and Alan Humphries

Not as good in layback as #1 but used himself well; strong topline; pleasing head.

3.       Speyside Storm Chaser – Pat Munro

Nice proportions, short loin, needs to settle into movement; shorter stride.

Intermediate Dog

1.       Ch Arctique The Rain Maker – Liz Steed

Beautiful chiselled head, smooth moving dog with a level topline; balanced angles, short hocks, nice length of neck with smooth transition into shoulders; a tad short on leg.

2.       Kavandale Royal Kazaar (AI) – Carolyn Stevens & Katherine van den Berg

Pleasing head, shoulder and upper arm placement; good, easy lateral; longer in loin.

3.       Glentreve Time-T-Play-the-Game – Glenys Fletcher

Pretty outline with shorter back but steeper in shoulder; cobby outline; proud of tail; correct coat, good feet.

Limit Dog

1.       Goldriver Leader of the Pack – Marilyn Black & Angela Sharp

Beautiful proportions, cobby correct outline with short loin and extended ribs; level topline, beautiful return of upper arm, masculine head; a youngster to watch out for in maturity; very deserving of Reserve Dog CC.

New Zealand Bred Dog

1.       Speyside Starry Knight – Meredith Pitcher

Nice return of upper arm and resulting forechest; balanced, held his topline and more efficient on the move than #2.

2.       Speyside Winter-Spark – Robyn Bland

Balanced standing and on the move; tight feet and pasterns; would have liked more turn of upper arm.

3.       Deorodawn Dixon of Honeyglen – Roger Corbett

Nice front assembly; needs to settle with experience; slightly proud of tail.

Stud Dog

1.       Ch Mistymoor Don’t Get Caught – Jan Cook

Beautiful breed type; balanced, cobby outline, lovely head and expression.

Veteran Dog

1.       Mistymoor Kindred-Spirit – Carolyn Stevens & Jan Cook

Classic proportions, shorter outline with good fill behind elbows; sufficient forechest, pretty head and kindly expression; short hocks.

2.       Spl Gr Ch Seacove Windjammer CDX – Jan Bedford

Another quality dog, sound moving, longer in loin, nice head; could use better return of upper arm.

3.       NZ Gr Ch/Aust Sup Ch Glentreve Putting the Wind Up Goldsmith – Kirsten Price

Lovely veteran; balanced with nice angles fore and aft, level topline, good bend of stifle; out of coat.

Open Dog

1.       Ch Speyside Bon Chance – Angela Milsted

Honest, moderate, correct dog whose structural proportions enabled his smooth, steady movement, suggesting a dog that could work all day; nice transition of neck into shoulder, short loin; exceptional quality throughout.  Delighted to award him the Dog CC and BEST OF BREED.

2.       Aust Ch/NZ Ch Goldriver Off the Radar – Marilyn Black & Lauren Morris

Good tight feet, strong short hocks, adequate return of upper arm and forechest; used himself well on the move.

3.       Ch Goldsmith Happy Larry – Kirsten Price

Strong breed type; lovely head and expression; would have liked more up front; outline longer due to length in loin.

Baby Puppy Bitch

1.       Goldsmith (name applied for) – Kirsten Price

Baby puppy with lots of potential; moved well and with confidence for one so young; lovely feet and pigment.

Puppy Bitch

1.       Seacove C’Est La Vie – Jan Bedford

Co-ordinated on the move, held her topline; lovely outline and fill, feminine head.

2.       Mistymoor Whoops A Daisy – Jan Cook

Much potential but steeper in shoulder than #1; not as developed in ribs in motion, topline needed to settle on this day.

3.       Mistymoor Escape the Chill – Jan & Dave Cook

Lovely puppy but difficult to assess; appeared steeper in croup but could have been due to lack of training.

Junior Bitch

1.       Mistymoor U Cruise U Lose – Jan & Dave Cook

Cobby bitch with pleasing outline; feminine head with good front; efficient and balanced moving.

2.       Autumn Light at Salhouse – Carole McNie

Longer cast with superior front end; good bone; tight feet; harsher expression due to rounder eye.

3.       Speyside French Liaison – Pat Munro

Despite ample return of upper arm, withers set forward; not as level moving; appeared roached in topline but could have been due to discomfort while being hand stacked.

Intermediate Bitch

1.       Ch Seacove Hidden Treasure – Jan Bedford

Superior, feminine bitch; outstanding outline, pretty head; workmanlike, sound and efficient mover; covered group and epitomised the functioning, working Golden Retriever.  Pleased to award her the Bitch CC and RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.

1.       Glentreve Play-Time at Goldenkiwi – Debbie Edwards

Longer cast, beautiful condition; good rib spring and fill; front to rear not as balanced but held in motion.

2.       Arctique April Rain – Lindsay and Lyn Morris

Close decision but not as ample in body as #2 and choppier on the move; short underline due to correct return of upper arm; strong pasterns and feet.

Limit Bitch

1.       Goldsmith Just A Mo – Kirsten Price

Lovely bitch; cobbier outline with balanced angles; coordinated movement.

2.       Goldendream Take Your Time – Melanie Snowdon

Beautiful presentation and style; longer cast with nice fill behind elbows; not as smooth moving as #1.

3.       Mistymoor That’s Nice – Jan Cook

Balanced, pleasing outline but not holding on the move; could use more forechest.

New Zealand Bred Bitch

1.       Glentreve Frozen Delta – Glenys Fletcher

Lovely breed type, pretty head, correct coat; extended ribs with desirable short loin; solid, level mover with balanced outline.

2.       Ch Arctique Summer Rain – Liz Steed

Longer outline and shorter on leg; good forechest; smoother and more coordinated than #3.

3.       Ch Golden Light at Salhouse – Carole McNie

Strong return of upper arm with good angle in front but needed more bend in stifle for prime balance; feminine head with kindly expression; full ribbing and depth.

Brood Bitch

1.       Ch Goldenkiwi Time in Motion – Melanie Snowdon and Debbie Edwards

Lovely head; tight decision between #1 and #2; better return of upper arm; good fill behind elbows.

2.       NZ/Aust Ch Arctique September Rain – Liz Steed

Pretty outline with feminine head; slightly short on leg with less reach than #1.

3.       J’More Kelima of M’Turk – Katy Austin

Good breed type, shorter backed and balanced; correct coat; would have liked fuller ribbing.

Veteran Bitch

1.       Pinkerly West Virginia (Imp.Italy) – Margaret Kerr

Beautiful bitch, well made, superior head, good forechest, short loin; took her a while to settle into motion but when she did, revealed balance with exceptional reach and drive.  My Reserve CC Bitch.

Open Bitch

1.       Ch Arctique Fire and Rain – Lyn Morris and Liz Steed

Workmanlike bitch, so feminine with excellent proportions; handler needed to be more in sync with her; strong front assembly, good fill and depth.

2.       Ch Glentreve A-Moment-in-Time at Goldenkiwi – Debbie Edwards & Glenys Fletcher

Beautifully presented; long of loin and outline; nice, easy lateral; not as good in shoulder but sufficient forechest and beautiful bend of stifle.

3.       Inniscroft Chances Are – Jan Cook & Margaret Kerr

Shorter outline but long in loin; not as smooth on the lateral; would have like more bend in stifle and stronger topline.
